This afternoon, the Council of the District of Columbia unanimously confirmed Dr. Lewis Ferebee as Chancellor of DC Public Schools. Dr. Ferebee comes to DCPS at a time when our families are demanding leadership that is hyper-focused on closing the opportunity gap; championing equity; demonstrating transparency; prioritizing family engagement; institutionalizing collaborative decision-making; and effectively coordinating supports for our students and educators — all of which is necessary to ensuring a strong network of neighborhood schools in every ward our city.

I am optimistic about Chancellor Ferebee’s pledge to listen to our voices and work alongside us to do things differently. It will take our collective effort and steadfast determination to keep our city’s promise to all young Washingtonians. My hope now is that our community will lean into the tough conversations and hard work ahead of us and hold this new leader accountable for the progress DC’s children are long overdue. I look forward to working productively with Chancellor Ferebee and wish him much success as he begins the work of advancing our community’s vision for DC Public Schools.
